Alvaro Arbeloa Targets Real Madrid's Cesar Palacios for Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. And he’s looking somewhere he knows better than most: Real Madrid’s academy.

The Spaniard has identified Cesar Palacios as the latest Castilla product he wants to bring to the Premier League, pushing Fulham’s hierarchy to explore a deal for the attacking midfielder as he shapes his first squad in west London.

Palacios at a crossroads

Palacios has started pre-season with Real Madrid’s first team, training at Valdebebas and tasting life at the very top. But everyone around the player knows the reality: his immediate future almost certainly lies away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Earlier in the summer, the 21-year-old thought he had his next step lined up. A verbal agreement with Como was in place, the framework of a move seemingly settled, and both the player and his representatives believed the transfer was on the brink of completion. Then it fell apart. No contracts signed, no formal announcement, just a deal that drifted away before it truly existed on paper.

That collapse reopened the market. FC Porto asked the question. Osasuna showed interest. Yet none of those approaches advanced to the point of an agreement. For now, Palacios is back in Madrid, weighing up his options with the club and trying to plot a path that gives him minutes, responsibility, and a platform worthy of his talent.

His contract runs until 2027. On paper, that gives Real Madrid control. On the pitch, it makes an exit feel almost inevitable. With the route to regular senior football at the Bernabeu blocked, the logical move is to find a club willing to build around him now, not in three years’ time.

Arbeloa’s trusted lieutenant

That is where Arbeloa comes in. Few coaches know Palacios as well as Fulham’s new head coach.

Arbeloa worked closely with him at Castilla and with the Real Madrid first team. He was the man who handed Palacios his senior debut for Los Blancos in January, trusting the youngster in a squad overflowing with established stars. The attacking midfielder went on to make seven appearances, a small but significant foothold in one of the most competitive squads in world football.

Those minutes clearly left a mark. Arbeloa now wants Palacios at the heart of his Fulham project, seeing a player he believes can adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League while offering the technical quality and intelligence that come out of Valdebebas almost as standard.

For Fulham, it is an intriguing opportunity: a 21-year-old with Real Madrid schooling, senior experience, and a coach who already knows exactly how to use him.

Fulham’s Madrid connection

Palacios is not the only name on Arbeloa’s Real Madrid list.

The former Castilla and Real Madrid coach has also asked Fulham to keep tabs on Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono, two more youngsters he knows well and rates highly. He is not simply shopping at his old club out of comfort; he is targeting players whose development he has overseen, whose personalities he understands, and whom he believes can handle a move into a demanding league and a new country.

There is, however, a new variable in Madrid. Jose Mourinho, Arbeloa’s replacement at Real Madrid, plans to take a long, hard look at these youngsters during pre-season before signing off on any exits. He wants to see them up close, test them, and decide whether they are tools he can use now or assets the club can afford to let go.

That decision will shape Fulham’s summer. If Mourinho gives the green light, Arbeloa could land not just one, but potentially several familiar faces to accelerate his rebuild. If Mourinho decides to keep them in his orbit, Fulham will have to look elsewhere.

For Palacios, the choice is stark. Stay and fight for scraps of game time in a stacked Real Madrid squad, or follow the coach who trusted him first into one of the toughest leagues in the world. It is the kind of career call that can define a decade.
