Al-Hilal did not just change targets this summer. They changed strategy.

The Saudi giants were deep in talks to prise Raphinha away from Barcelona, budget ring-fenced, structure agreed in principle, and a blockbuster move all but mapped out. Then, in the space of a few days, the deal disintegrated – and the money was hurled in a very different direction: towards Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville.

Saudi media figure Mohammed Al-Bukairy laid out the inside story on his account on X, sketching a negotiation that went from ambitious to acrimonious in record time.

From Raphinha to rupture

Al-Hilal opened with a heavyweight proposal: an official offer of 80 million euros to Barcelona for Raphinha. The plan was smart and aggressive. The club wanted to fold Joao Cancelo into the settlement, using his situation – on loan at Barça – to knock 20 million euros off the overall package.

Then came the response from Barcelona.

According to Al-Bukairy, president Joan Laporta did not just push back. He pushed the price up. The Catalan club’s chief is said to have demanded that the 80 million offer be raised to 100 million euros, a hike that detonated the mood around the talks.

Inside Al-Hilal, that stance was read in one word: “blackmail.” For the Saudi hierarchy, the jump in price simply did not match the technical value they believed Raphinha would bring. Trust evaporated. The file was closed.

No drawn-out saga. No second bid. The decision-makers at the club shut the door on Raphinha and swung immediately to the next phase: find a world-class winger of the same calibre, and do it fast.

A new name on the radar

With negotiations with Barcelona stalling, another name moved to the front of the board.

Al-Bukairy revealed that Crysencio Summerville, the Dutch winger shining in England, emerged as the standout alternative while Al-Hilal’s recruitment team scanned the market. At that point, the budget was still earmarked for others – primarily Raphinha, and even Mason Greenwood, who eventually signed for Fenerbahce.

Summerville, Al-Bukairy stressed, was not the first-choice target when this window began. The funds were ready to be poured into different profiles. But the situation in Europe was shifting, and Al-Hilal’s speed of thought shifted with it.

The club leaned on what he described as “precise sporting intelligence” – close monitoring of rival clubs’ movements across the continent. That intelligence delivered a warning.

Roma’s move triggers Al-Hilal’s blitz

A trusted source, Al-Bukairy said, alerted Al-Hilal that Roma were closing in on Summerville. The Italian side were believed to be on the verge of wrapping up a deal for just 50 million euros.

That figure changed everything.

At that moment, Al-Hilal pounced. Determined not to lose a player they now saw as a premium opportunity, the Saudi champions went in with a brutal, decisive counter: an offer of 80 million euros, a full 30 million more than Roma’s bid.

The effect was instant.

That “lavish” proposal, as Al-Bukairy put it, left West Ham United with little to think about. The English club accepted immediately, the negotiations accelerated, and the final procedures – including initial signatures – took less than an hour to complete. In the words of the Saudi media figure, that was all it took to secure the “luxurious Dutch winger.”

A rising star with numbers to match the fee

Al-Hilal’s willingness to commit such a huge sum did not come from a highlight reel alone. The club had tracked Summerville closely with the Netherlands national team and watched his stock soar on the biggest stage.

At the 2026 World Cup, the 24-year-old did more than just justify his call-up. He stunned observers, emerging as the Netherlands’ surprise of the tournament. Across six matches, he was directly involved in five goals, a return that propelled him onto the wishlists of Europe’s elite.

His club form backed up the hype.

Before his move to the Zaeem, Summerville’s 2023–2024 season with Leeds United stood out as a career-defining campaign: 21 goals, 10 assists, and the Player of the Season award in the English Championship.
