Ajax in Race Against Time to Secure Arokodare

Ajax have started the clock. On Wednesday afternoon the club filed the paperwork for Tolu Arokodare’s work permit, and from that moment, every hour began to matter.

De Telegraaf report the application is in, but journalist Mike Verweij calls it “a race against the clock”. He’s not exaggerating. Ajax’s season is already being squeezed by deadlines before a ball has even been kicked in the Eredivisie.

European clock ticking

The first pressure point lies in Europe. After the 1-4 away win over FK Vojvodina, Ajax are all but through in their Conference League qualifier. One and a half feet in the next round, as they say. On Thursday at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, they can finish the job.

Once that tie is wrapped up, the paperwork storm really hits. By Wednesday evening, 5 August at the latest, Ajax must submit a fresh squad list to UEFA for the next qualifying round, where Shelbourne or Nomme Kalju await. The club want Arokodare on that list. Desperately.

Jordi Cruyff will spend the coming days watching his inbox as closely as the training pitch. If the work permit lands in time, Ajax intend to register the Nigerian striker immediately for the next European hurdle. No delay, no hesitation.

Míchel’s plan for the league opener

Europe is only half the story. Coach Míchel also has domestic plans for his new No 9.

Ajax open their Eredivisie campaign on Sunday 9 August, away to PEC Zwolle. Míchel wants the 1.97-metre forward available from day one, a towering option at the tip of his attack.

For that to happen, the club must complete a second set of formalities. Arokodare has to be registered with the KNVB by 12:00pm on Friday 7 August at the latest. Miss that cut-off and Míchel’s new weapon stays in the stands.

Inside the club, the hope is clear: get everything signed, stamped and cleared well before the deadline so the coach can throw him straight into the squad. In the striker role this season, Arokodare will mainly be fighting Marcos Leonardo for minutes, the Brazilian having arrived from Al-Hilal for just under twenty million euros. It is a duel that could define Ajax’s attacking identity this year.

Loan sealed, option set

While the permits remain pending, the transfer itself is done. On Wednesday, Ajax confirmed Arokodare’s move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The deal is a one-season loan, with Ajax paying a modest fee to the Premier League club and securing an option to buy for twenty million euros. For a 1.97-metre striker with European ambitions, it is a calculated gamble with a clear ceiling.

Now everything rests on bureaucracy catching up with football’s urgency. If the signatures and stamps arrive on time, Arokodare’s first touch in an Ajax shirt could come in a European qualifier, with another debut waiting in Zwolle three days later.

If they don’t, Ajax’s new striker will start his Amsterdam adventure watching others play the games he was signed to change.
