Top Performers in AFCON History

Egypt holds the record for the most AFCON wins with seven titles, including the first two editions in 1957 and 1959, and a remarkable three consecutive titles in 2006, 2008, and 2010. The Pharaohs have long been a dominant force in African football.

Cameroon follows with five titles. Known as the Indomitable Lions, they captured their first trophy in 1984 and secured back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2002. Their latest success came in 2017 after defeating Egypt 2-1.

Ghana claimed four titles, mostly between the 1960s and 1980s, establishing themselves as a continental powerhouse early on. Their closest chance for a fifth title was as runners-up in 2015.

Nigeria and Ivory Coast both have three titles each. Nigeria’s victories span from 1980 to 2013, while Ivory Coast won their titles by beating Ghana twice on penalties and clinched their latest championship at home in 2023.

Algeria and DR Congo have each won twice. Algeria took titles in 1990 and 2019, while DR Congo earned theirs in 1968 and 1974.

Senegal recently joined the multiple-title club, winning in 2021 and again in 2026. Their 2026 victory was a narrow 1-0 win against Morocco, inspired by star player Sadio Mane.
