Every big club carries its ghosts. For AC Milan, one of the most haunting wears Chelsea blue and pulls the strings for Argentina.

Enzo Fernández was a handshake away from San Siro in the summer of 2022. Not a fantasy, not a vague scouting note – a concrete target, with an agreement virtually in place. Then numbers, clauses and caution tore the deal apart.

The Almost-Rossonero

Before Benfica turned him into a European sensation and before Chelsea shattered their transfer record to bring him to London, Enzo was on Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara’s list as a priority opportunity.

Inside Casa Milan, the budget for that summer had to be weighed with precision. The management viewed Charles De Ketelaere as the centrepiece of their project, the attacking talent to build around. To push aggressively for Enzo under River’s terms meant stretching the plan, and doing it for only partial ownership.

The decision followed: Milan stepped back.

They chose to protect their structure and commit their resources to De Ketelaere, judged at the time as the absolute priority. Enzo, despite the admiration and the verbal green light, slipped off the table.

He didn’t stay available for long.

From Lisbon to London in Fast-Forward

Once Milan walked away, Benfica moved. Quickly, decisively, without the same reservations. Enzo landed in Lisbon and needed only a few months to explode. His blend of aggression, intelligence and technical calm turned him into one of the most complete midfielders on the continent.

His World Cup in Qatar did the rest. Wearing the Argentina shirt, he confirmed what the scouts had seen at River and Benfica: a midfielder for the very top level, one who could handle the weight of expectation on the biggest stage.

Chelsea then arrived with a figure that underlined just how far his value had rocketed – around €127m. From a clause of roughly €18m for 75% of his rights to one of the most expensive transfers in football history. The kind of leap that turns a missed opportunity into a long-term regret.

A Star Out of Reach

Enzo’s rise has not slowed. At 25, he remains central to Argentina’s ambitions. In the current World Cup, he has once again imposed himself as a key figure in their march to the final, scoring the equaliser in the semi-final against England, set up by Lionel Messi in the dying minutes. The moment captured his profile perfectly: timing the run, trusting the pass, delivering when everything is on the line.

Now his name circles around Real Madrid, the natural habitat for players who have proven they belong at the absolute summit. For Milan, that level of fee and competition places him firmly out of reach.

The story is simple on paper: a clause, a budget, a choice. But in the stands and in the directors’ box, it lingers as something else entirely.

Because every time Enzo Fernández dictates a final, somewhere in Milan there’s an unanswerable question: what would he have become in red and black?
