Abdukodir Khusanov Signs Five-Year Deal with Manchester City

Manchester City have moved quickly to lock down one of their emerging pillars at the back, handing Abdukodir Khusanov a new five-year contract that underlines just how highly the club rate the Uzbekistan international.

At 22, Khusanov is still at the start of his Premier League story, but his impact since arriving from Lens in January 2025 has been impossible to ignore. He walked into a dressing room built on serial success and adapted with striking ease, helping City lift both the FA Cup and the League Cup last season while pushing the title race all the way to a second-place finish.

This is not a routine extension. It is a statement of faith.

Khusanov has already collected 30 caps for Uzbekistan and carried that experience onto the biggest stage, starting all three of his country’s World Cup Group K matches. That blend of international maturity and club-level composure has quickly made him one of the most intriguing young centre-backs in Europe.

For the player, this deal is both reward and responsibility.

“This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City,” he said, reflecting the satisfaction of a defender who has climbed rapidly from French football to the sharp end of the English game. “I’ve enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player.

“I have a new challenge now, which is to impress (new manager) Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that.”

That last line matters. A new contract guarantees security, not minutes. With Maresca beginning his own chapter at the Etihad, every training session becomes an audition, every appearance a chance to cement a place in a reshaped City back line.

Inside the club, there is no doubt about the defender’s trajectory. Director of football Hugo Viana did not hold back in his assessment.

“We’ve been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir’s development since he arrived in England,” Viana said. “We’re seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender – but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back.

“At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see.”

City’s recruitment over the past decade has often focused on ready-made stars. Khusanov represents the other strand of their strategy: identify high-ceiling talent early, drop them into a demanding environment, and trust that the club’s structure will accelerate their rise.

The timing of the deal is no coincidence either. Khusanov becomes the second key figure to commit his long-term future to City this week, following England forward Phil Foden’s new four-year contract. One is already a homegrown talisman, the other a fast-rising defender from Central Asia. Together, they offer a glimpse of the spine City hope will carry them through the next era.

The trophies he has already helped win are only the starting line. The real question now is whether Khusanov can turn promise into dominance and make himself indispensable in Maresca’s first great City side.
