Changes to the 2026 International Soccer Breaks: What to Expect
The upcoming international break starts on September 21, 2026 and extends through October 6, 2026. This unusually long window spans 16 days, giving national teams the opportunity to schedule up to four matches during this period.
Why Were the September and October Breaks Combined?
Traditionally, FIFA scheduled separate one-week international breaks in September and October. For 2026, this has been replaced by a single extended break that covers both months. The reason for this change is the expanded format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which featured 48 teams and lasted six weeks throughout the summer.
Because players endured a longer tournament, FIFA decided to allow extra recovery and reintegration time with their club teams before resuming international duties. Combining the September and October breaks into one long camp means coaches get more time with their squads—something rare in international football—to develop tactics and build team cohesion.
Is There Still a November International Break?
Yes, the regular international break remains in place in November 2026. From November 9 to November 17, national teams worldwide will gather to play up to two matches as part of the ongoing competition cycle.
Looking Ahead
With the 2026 World Cup behind them and Spain crowned champions, attention now shifts to qualifying for the next tournament in 2030, which will be hosted across Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This new scheduling approach offers a fresh rhythm for international football, with longer preparation phases between major tournaments.
