2026 Ballon d'Or Nominees Announcement Date and Ceremony Details
The 70th Ballon d'Or winner, honoring the best player from the 2025/26 soccer season, will be revealed this October. This prestigious individual award is among the highest honors in the sport.
Last year's champion, Rodri, who played a key role in Spain's World Cup victory, may contend for the title again. This year's event marks a special milestone with the ceremony taking place at a new location to celebrate the anniversary.
France Football will officially unveil the men's and women's 2026 Ballon d'Or nominees on Tuesday, September 8, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET. The announcement will feature a shortlist of 30 players, from which the eventual winner will be chosen.
How Does the Nominee Shortlist Work?
The 30-player list is ranked during the gala, starting from the lowest-ranked nominee up to the winner, who takes home the award. Fans and experts eagerly await this reveal to see which top players have made the cut.
Details of the 2026 Ballon d'Or Ceremony
The award presentation will happen on Monday, October 26. Unlike previous years where the gala was hosted in Paris, this edition will be held in London, England. This change pays tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the first-ever Ballon d'Or recipient.
How Are Winners Chosen?
International journalists selected by France Football determine the 30 finalists for the men's Ballon d'Or and the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper. For the women's Ballon d'Or, a panel of 50 global female soccer journalists selects the nominees. Additionally, a group of 32 former Ballon d'Or winners chooses 10 finalists for the Kopa Trophy, awarded to players under 21.
Reducing the number of jurors aims to focus more on individual merit and fairness. There has already been debate following Rodri's win and Lionel Messi’s controversial 2023 triumph, putting pressure on the updated voting process.
