Manchester United Pursue Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde for Left-Back Position

Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as they step up plans to recruit a new left-back.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days, sounding out the possibility of a move and the conditions required to make it happen. The approach comes with United viewing the position as their next major priority after wrapping up a deal for Carlos Baleba.

Balde’s situation at Barcelona has shifted over the past year. Once seen as a long-term starter, the full-back endured an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, losing rhythm and momentum just as his reputation was soaring. While he recovered, his place in the pecking order did not.

The pressure on his spot grew when João Cancelo, initially on loan, forced his way into Hansi Flick’s plans. The Portuguese full-back became the preferred option over the second half of last season, and his permanent return to the club this week has only tightened the squeeze on Balde’s game time.

That decision leaves Balde staring at the prospect of starting the new season as second-choice at left-back for the La Liga champions. For a player of his age and profile, that is a significant crossroads.

Barcelona, dealing with financial realities and a deep squad in certain areas, are thought to be open to a sale at the right price. Not actively pushing him out, but listening. United have sensed that opening and stepped in.

Romano summarised the situation: United “keep looking for new left back, next priority after Baleba deal. There have been calls with Alejandro Balde's camp over last days to understand if exit is possible and conditions.”

One key detail remains: Balde is not agitating to leave. By all accounts, he is happy at Barcelona and content at the Spotify Camp Nou, a factor that could complicate any negotiations. United may find that convincing the club is only half the battle; convincing the player could be just as demanding.

So the lines are open, the interest is real, and the stakes are clear. United want a new left-back. Barcelona might sell. Balde is settled.

Something has to give.
