Manchester United's Midfield Strategy: Tielemans and Santos Set for Debut

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are in line to make their competitive Manchester United bows this weekend, as Michael Carrick’s side kick off against Hull City with a midfield built to define his first full season in charge.

Carrick’s midfield takes shape

Santos, the £50million summer signing from Chelsea, has barely missed a beat since walking through the door. He featured in all six pre-season friendlies, a constant presence in the middle of the pitch and a clear hint that Carrick trusts him to start on Saturday afternoon.

Tielemans’ route has been different but no less significant. The Belgian arrived later than most, handed a mandatory three-week break after helping Belgium reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Any rust looked gone by the time he completed 90 minutes against AC Milan in the final warm-up game, and he is expected to slot straight into the competitive action.

Carrick could roll with the same trio that started the 4-2 defeat to Milan in Poland: Santos and Tielemans behind captain Bruno Fernandes, who is set to return to his preferred No 10 role. It is a combination that gives United craft, control and a clear identity through the centre.

Defensive dilemmas and a big call at right-back

The picture is less settled at the back. Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness has opened the door for youngster Ayden Heaven, who is pushing to partner Harry Maguire against one of Maguire’s former clubs. Leny Yoro is the other contender, but Heaven’s momentum and Martinez’s fitness issues could tilt the decision his way.

Senne Lammens is expected to start in goal, with Luke Shaw locked in at left-back. On the opposite flank, Carrick must choose between Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. Dalot offers familiarity and balance; Mazraoui brings a different angle in possession. The call at right-back will say plenty about how bold Carrick wants to be from the first whistle.

A reshuffled front line

Higher up the pitch, Patrick Dorgu has quietly become one of Carrick’s most intriguing options. Either side of a cruel injury suffered in January against Arsenal, he has been reinvented as a left-winger, adding direct running and width. That evolution creates a headache, because Matheus Cunha does his best work from that same left-hand channel.

The knock-on effect runs through the entire front line. With Benjamin Sesko not ready to start after a three-month lay-off, Cunha is expected to deputise again as the central striker. That move frees Dorgu to stay wide on the left and pushes Bryan Mbeumo back to the right, where his energy and delivery can stretch Hull’s back line.

Carrick’s choices will reveal plenty about the Manchester United he wants to build: bold with the ball, packed with technicians in midfield, and just risky enough in attack to turn an opening day into a statement.
