World Cup 2026 Quarterfinals: Ranking the Four Matchups from Most Exciting to Least

The World Cup 2026 has narrowed down from 48 teams to just eight. The quarterfinal stage begins Thursday after a day without matches, setting the stage for four intense clashes. Here’s our ranking of those games, based on team form, player impact, and overall intrigue.

4. Argentina vs. Switzerland

Saturday | 9 p.m. ET | Fox Odds: Argentina (-285), Switzerland (+220)

Switzerland has reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954 after their win over Colombia. They may be underrated here. Meanwhile, Argentina keeps delivering knockout-stage drama, having played two of the tournament’s most thrilling elimination games so far.

Both sides bring solid experience. The Swiss are expected to adopt a defensive approach against defending champions Argentina, but trying to hold off Argentina late in the match might not be a wise strategy. We might be underestimating both teams’ potential to make this game exciting.

3. Belgium vs. Spain

Friday | 3 p.m. ET | Fox Odds: Spain (-325), Belgium (+250)

Belgium’s strong comeback against Senegal and dominant win over the United States raised questions about their true level. Kevin De Bruyne missed the US game, while Jeremy Doku and Romelu Lukaku came off the bench and were dangerous—though the US defense left much to be desired.

Spain appears sharper as the tournament progresses but needed late minutes to break through Portugal’s tough defense, which allowed just three goals in five matches. Spain’s fluid passing could trouble Belgium’s midfield and defense, especially with Belgium missing Amadou Onana due to injury. Thibaut Courtois remains a key figure between the posts for Belgium.

2. France vs. Morocco

Thursday | 4 p.m. ET | Fox Odds: France (-375), Morocco (+275)

This quarterfinal is a rematch of last World Cup’s semifinal. Morocco has been impressive offensively, scoring 10 goals in five games compared to six in seven matches four years ago, though their defense isn’t quite as tight now. They had four clean sheets before France’s 2-0 semifinal victory in 2022.

France has improved offensively as well, led by Kylian Mbappé, who trails only Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race. Supporting players like Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, and Bradley Barcola give opponents multiple threats to worry about. Still, France’s defense shows some weaknesses, relying on their attack to cover midfield shortcomings. Morocco will put that attack to the test in what should be the toughest challenge for France yet.

1. England vs. Norway

Saturday | 5 p.m. ET | Fox Odds: England (-225), Norway (+175)

England holds a genuine chance at the World Cup title, but Norway might feel the same way. Erling Haaland’s debut World Cup has been remarkable, with seven goals scored despite missing Norway’s final group match alongside much of their starting lineup. His teammates have combined for just four goals, showing how vital he is.

England’s center backs know Haaland well—John Stones and Marc Guehi are his Manchester City teammates, and Ezri Konsa has faced him at Aston Villa. However, Haaland outplayed Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus for his first goal against them, so familiarity doesn’t guarantee success.

The English squad faces a transition from Mexico City’s altitude to Miami’s humidity. Their recent win over Mexico was demanding, especially playing much of the second half with ten men. Norway impressed against Brazil and won’t hesitate to press England aggressively. This matchup promises high stakes and intense action.
