Why England Sings Wonderwall After World Cup Victories
The 2026 World Cup has introduced a variety of team rituals, with Norway's "Ro!" chant grabbing plenty of attention. Yet, England has made a memorable impression by singing Oasis' classic "Wonderwall" after every win.
The band from Manchester, England, provided one of the songs included in the team's match playlist. Following each victory, the English players link arms and sing along with their fans, creating a powerful shared moment.
This tradition has been met with loud cheers and seems to resonate beyond England’s borders. At the time of writing, "Wonderwall" tops the United Kingdom's Spotify Top 50 chart.
Why Does England Choose Wonderwall?
The England squad performs "Wonderwall" because it was one of three songs submitted for official use during the tournament. FIFA asked teams ahead of the 2026 World Cup to submit playlists for warmups, goals, and wins, according to USA TODAY.
Alongside "Wonderwall," England also picked "Sweet Caroline." The Oasis tune, though older, has become a firm favorite among players and fans alike.
"That was one of my favorite moments ever in an England shirt," said captain Harry Kane. "It’s just the first game, and we’re not getting carried away, but that connection with the fans means so much to us."
Noel Gallagher, a member of Oasis, told The Sun that "Wonderwall belongs to the people," describing the post-match singing as a magical bond between players and supporters.
Liam Gallagher, Noel’s brother and fellow band member, showed full support on social media after England’s quarterfinal win against Norway, tweeting: "Cmon England cmon Wonderwall".

Here are some lines from "Wonderwall":
Today is gonna be the day That they're gonna throw it back to you By now, you should've somehow Realised what you gotta do I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do about you now And all the roads we have to walk are winding And all the lights that lead us there are blinding There are many things that I would like to say to you But I don't know how Because maybe You're gonna be the one that saves me And after all You're my wonderwall
