Alan Shearer Backs Arsenal to Sign Julian Alvarez and Cement Premier League Supremacy
Alan Shearer has voiced strong support for Arsenal to swoop in and sign striker Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, potentially blocking rival Barcelona in the process. The former England forward believes adding Alvarez would guarantee Arsenal's hold on the Premier League crown.
Alvarez's Transfer Drama Opens Door for Arsenal
Shearer points out a unique chance for Arsenal to capture Alvarez, who is reportedly unsettled at Atletico and keen to join Barcelona. Yet Atletico’s hesitation to sell directly to a Spanish rival creates an opening for the Gunners. Reports suggest Alvarez is warming to a move north of London after initially favoring Camp Nou.
Arsenal are currently looking to strengthen their attack after mixed results from £64 million signing Viktor Gyokeres in his debut season at the Emirates Stadium.
Shearer Sees Arsenal Taking Advantage
“We’ve heard of a lot of pushing from Barcelona and the reluctance from Atletico,” Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast. “It seems like their thinking might be, if we have to sell, we’re not selling to you [Barca]. There’s maybe a small window there for Arsenal to nab him you would think. And if they do it’s done by the way [the Premier League title race].”
Hostile Atmosphere at Atletico
Alvarez’s situation worsened recently as Atletico fans jeered him during their La Liga draw with Villarreal, frustrated by his desire to leave for Barcelona. Since arriving in Madrid for £82 million from Manchester City, Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances across two seasons and helped City win back-to-back league titles, though he was limited behind star striker Erling Haaland.
Micah Richards Supports Arsenal's Move
Micah Richards added: “I would actually go for a striker if I was Arsenal and we’ve all seen the situation with Alvarez at Atletico. He was booed by his own fans the other night and there are reports he wants to go to Barcelona. But are Atletico going to sell him to Barca? It might be one for Arsenal to just sneak in there and offer a bid. He’s clearly not happy. If Arsenal had Alvarez he would take them to the next level.”
Arsenal Ready to Strengthen Title Defense
With Alvarez unsettled, a formal offer from Arsenal could settle matters quickly. The Gunners are riding high after claiming the Premier League trophy last season for the first time since 2004 and reaching the Champions League final. Adding a proven winner like Alvarez would deepen their threat domestically.
Manager Mikel Arteta’s squad has already started their title defense strongly with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City. Bringing Alvarez on board before the deadline could boost Arsenal’s prospects significantly.
