Rodri Says Barcelona Aren't Champions League Favourites, Points to Key Gaps for European Success

Despite Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga, the Spain captain believes they still have work ahead to conquer the Champions League again.

Barcelona’s Struggle to Win in Europe

Barcelona has won consecutive La Liga titles but has not been able to match that success in the Champions League, where they have gone 12 years without a trophy. This European gap was a big reason behind bringing the 30-year-old Rodri to the club over the summer.

Rodri has fit right into the midfield but recently told Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona are not yet among Europe’s favourites.

Realistic Expectations From Rodri

"The Champions League is achievable, but I don’t think we’re favourites," Rodri said. "I see it as a realistic title for us. It’s the final step we need to show Europe what kind of team we are."

He pointed out that talent alone doesn’t win the Champions League. "You have to understand where we’re coming from and what it takes to become champions. This team still needs to polish several things to win it," he added. Rodri also stressed that players like him came partly to help the team grow and develop qualities important for winning such a unique competition.

Handling the Crucial Moments

Barcelona’s recent exits from the Champions League were marked by defensive lapses and disciplinary mistakes against teams like Inter and Atletico Madrid. Rodri explained that winning the tournament often hinges on key moments.

"I don’t think the Champions League is a tournament where the best team necessarily wins. It’s a tournament of moments, and understanding those moments," he said. "That’s perhaps the area where this team can improve. But if you ask whether we have a chance, that’s why I came here."

He suggested a more pragmatic approach might be needed. "It’s about controlling those moments that make the difference in a tie, especially in knockout rounds. Red cards, penalties, conceding fewer goals—those decide whether you go through or go out." Rodri hinted that being more consistent and solid defensively could matter more than attacking flair.

Learning from Past Defeats

Looking forward, Barcelona aims to turn previous European disappointments into lessons as they prepare for this season’s knockout stages. Drawing from his own experience winning the Champions League with Manchester City, Rodri talked about the importance of patience and learning.

"Before you win, you have to lose and learn," the World Cup winner said. "Those of us who have won big trophies know that. I’ve played many Champions League campaigns before finally winning it."

He believes gaining experience is essential: "Players learn year after year." Barcelona will hope to apply this wisdom to return to Europe's top.
