Rafa Marquez to Lead Mexico After 2026 World Cup

Mexico's journey in the recent World Cup ended with a loss to England, marking the conclusion of Javier Aguirre's third term as the national team's manager. Aguirre is stepping down, and his assistant, Rafa Marquez, will assume the role of head coach.

The legendary El Tri defender, who earned 147 caps for Mexico and achieved success across European leagues, has been groomed for this position since mid-2024. Marquez paused his coaching studies at Barcelona, where he won two UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships as a player, to join the Mexican national team staff.

Plans Confirmed Ahead of Time

Mexico's sporting director Duilio Davino, also a former defender for the national team, confirmed before the World Cup that Marquez had already signed his contract and arranged most of his coaching team. After retiring at his hometown club Atlas, Marquez took on the role of sporting president at Guadalajara before pursuing coaching credentials in Spain.

He led Barcelona's B team, Barcelona Athletic, starting in 2022. Although he extended his stay after the first season, he left once Mexico called him up for this new challenge.

Playing Experience and Style

Throughout his career, Marquez played mainly as a center back and defensive midfielder. He worked under coaches like Pep Guardiola, Didier Deschamps, and Ricardo La Volpe. Fans expect Marquez to bring a more attacking and modern approach compared to Aguirre's cautious style, who is rumored to retire at age 67.

Bright Future for Mexican Soccer

Despite the disappointment of exiting in the round of 16, Mexico’s squad includes promising talent. For instance, 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora became the youngest player to start a knockout stage match since Brazil’s Pele. Mora is one of five players aged 23 or younger on the 26-man roster.

Mora’s former U-20 teammate, Obed Vargas, is preparing for his first full season with Atlético Madrid. Mateo Chavez recently scored for El Tri against Czechia. Meanwhile, Armando "Hormiga" Gonzalez leads Liga MX in scoring and has attracted attention from multiple European clubs.
