Reason Behind the Longer Break

Traditionally, FIFA schedules separate international breaks in September and October. This year is different because of the extended 2026 World Cup, which expanded to 48 teams and lasted six weeks during the summer. To help players recover and settle back at their clubs, FIFA combined these two breaks into one long period. National teams will use this time for up to four matches and extended training camps, a rare opportunity to work more deeply with their squads.
