Norway Lodges Official Complaint Over Donald Trump's Role in Folarin Balogun Red Card Reversal

The controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun's red card during the 2026 World Cup has sparked international debate, culminating in Norway filing a formal complaint. The Norwegian Football Federation's president, Lise Klaveness, is pushing for action after Donald Trump's confirmed involvement in overturning Balogun's suspension.

Klaveness told The Times she will propose that the NFF board pursue an official complaint with FIFA regarding the handling of Balogun's ban. She warned that bending the rules in this way threatens the sport's foundation.

"Trying to sweep this under the rug now won't work," Klaveness said. "When you bend a rule like this, you're on a slippery slope that will put the whole game at risk. It is a worry for the game when you compromise fundamental rules of the game."

She added the decision appeared influenced by external political pressure rather than proper procedure. Klaveness also highlighted FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarding Trump the FIFA Peace Prize shortly before the tournament began as a troubling detail.

Trump's Admission and FIFA's Response

Donald Trump openly admitted to requesting a review of Balogun's one-match suspension, calling the initial red card "horrible". He explained to reporters he did not direct what FIFA should do but felt the punishment was unfair since it affected a match not yet played.

"I spoke to a man who is highly respected... I'm the one that got them to do it," Trump claimed about his conversation with Infantino.

Infantino acknowledged speaking with Trump but denied that the U.S. president influenced the final ruling, emphasizing the independent legal process within FIFA.

The Incident Behind the Controversy

During the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun was shown a red card after making contact with Tarik Muharemovic's back using his studs. The decision led to a suspension that would have sidelined him for the critical match against Belgium.

After Trump's intervention, FIFA disciplinary committee chair Mohammad Al Kamali reportedly reversed the suspension alone. Balogun returned for the Belgium game, but the U.S. team suffered a heavy defeat and left the tournament.
