Napoli Targets Gabriel Jesus After Lukaku Departure
Napoli’s pursuit of Gabriel Jesus has turned into a summer-long game of high-stakes transfer Tetris – and one of the key pieces has finally dropped into place.
The Serie A club, as reported by TuttoMercatoweb, have made the Arsenal striker their priority target in attack. At 29, the Brazilian has been identified as the ideal forward to spearhead Massimiliano Allegri’s reshaped frontline. But to bring him in, Napoli first had to clear the board.
Lukaku exit unlocks the move
The decisive move came with the departure of Romelu Lukaku. Frozen out and surplus to requirements, the Belgian has completed a permanent switch to Fenerbahce in a deal worth a reported €6 million (£5.1m). That transfer is worth far more to Napoli than the fee alone.
Lukaku’s exit slices a major chunk off the wage bill and gives the club the financial breathing space to go after Jesus without straying into dangerous territory with the regulations. It also signals a clear break with the old attacking structure. Allegri wants a more mobile, fluid front line; Jesus fits that vision, Lukaku did not.
Napoli are not stopping there. Further departures in the forward department, including a possible move away for Lorenzo Lucca, are on the table and could help fund what would be a significant outlay on salary and fee for Jesus.
Agent’s visit ignites rumours
The speculation kicked up another gear when Jesus’ agent, Giovanni Branchini, was seen at Napoli’s pre-season training base in Castel di Sangro. Branchini insisted he was only there to visit Allegri, but the timing was impossible to ignore.
With Lukaku gone and space opening in the squad, the sight of Jesus’ representative in the camp only added fuel to a story already gathering speed.
Arsenal ready to cash in
From Arsenal’s side, the stance is clear. With Jesus entering the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, the club are prepared to sell now rather than lose him for nothing next summer. The asking price is understood to be around €20m (£17m) for the former Manchester City forward.
Jesus is one of the higher earners in North London, and Arsenal are keen to streamline their wage bill as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen other areas of the squad. Injuries have disrupted the Brazilian’s rhythm over the past year, and his status has slipped. He now sits behind both Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres in Arteta’s attacking hierarchy.
That shift makes a clean break logical for all parties. Arsenal get a fee and room to manoeuvre; Jesus gets a leading role again.
Jesus open to Napoli switch
Napoli, strengthened by the Lukaku sale, now have the funds ready and a clear path to accelerate negotiations. According to TuttoMercatoweb, Jesus is fully open to the move and attracted by the prospect of playing in Naples.
The financial side remains delicate, but the Brazilian is reportedly willing to lower his current wage, believed to be around £265,000 per week, to make the deal happen. That willingness to compromise on salary underlines how appealing he finds the project under Allegri.
If Napoli and Arsenal can quickly agree on the fee and structure of the deal, Jesus is expected to travel to Italy to undergo his medical.
And then? Allegri would finally have his new-look front pairing: Gabriel Jesus alongside Rasmus Hojlund, a partnership built on movement, intensity and sharp finishing – and one that could redefine Napoli’s attack for the season ahead.
