Mexico Fans’ Celebration Causes Tremors After World Cup Win Over Ecuador
When Mexico scored two crucial goals against Ecuador in their intense World Cup knockout match, the crowd’s exuberant jumping and cheering generated noticeable tremors. Seismologists reported "significant" vibrations caused by the fans’ excitement during the game.
Mexico’s Digital Platform for Early Warning and Comprehensive Risk Management (SASSLA) detected these vibrations following both goals, confirming that the mass celebration produced measurable seismic activity near the stadium.
“The goal by Julian Quiñones against Ecuador was recorded on several seismographs,” SASSLA shared on X. “We also have a record of Raúl Jiménez’s second goal at the 31st minute.”
After Mexico’s 2-0 victory, which secured their place in the World Cup Round of 16, nearly a million fans flooded Mexico City’s streets to celebrate. Unfortunately, three people were crushed to death amid the crowded festivities.
Human Activity Causing ‘Earthquake-Like’ Vibrations
These crowd-induced tremors are not unique. Similar "human-induced earthquakes" have been documented before, triggered by activities like building construction, groundwater extraction, or fracking. Large events such as sports matches or concerts can also cause these artificial quakes.
A 2024 Taylor Swift concert provided an earlier example, where thousands jumping in unison created seismic signals detected up to 9 kilometers away.
“At the RaspberryShake station nearest Azteca Stadium, the burst of euphoria and collective shouting caused distinct vibrations in the ground,” noted SASSLA after the match.
The seismic monitoring group Sismo Alerta Mexicana explained that while these shakes aren't true earthquakes, the synchronized stomping and jumping generate short surface waves detectable by sensitive equipment.
“If a person walks near a seismograph, it registers. When many jump together nearby, the signal is much clearer,” they said. “These instruments pick up quakes worldwide, so they’re extremely sensitive.”
Research Into Crowd-Induced Seismic Signals
Scientists studying these phenomena believe such artificial vibrations help improve seismic instruments by distinguishing natural earthquakes from human-made signals. This research also aids in understanding subsurface structures and designing buildings that better withstand vibrations.
A study published in Seismological Research Letters examined these crowd-generated signals. It pointed out how large gatherings, like the 2023 Swift concert with over 70,000 attendees, produced strong vibrations detected by local seismic stations.
“All evidence suggests the source of the signal is primarily crowd movement responding to music,” the study authors concluded.
The Mexican team celebrated their win with dancing and cheers, unaware their joy would literally shake the ground beneath them.
