Tuesday’s game was delayed an hour due to lightning. Ecuador expressed frustration before the match about ticket distribution issues and loud Mexican fans disrupting their hotel rest, a common tactic in Latin American soccer rivalries.

Tensions rose on the field too. A hard foul near the sideline led to players crowding officials. Later, a heated exchange saw Ecuador’s Piero Hincapié cover his mouth while speaking to Mexico’s forward Santi Giménez. The referee halted play, reviewed video, and showed Hincapié a red card for violating FIFA’s new rule banning players from hiding their mouths during confrontations. He joins Paraguay’s Miguel Almirón as one of two players sent off for this infraction so far.
