This win guarantees Mexico will top Group A with one game remaining, following a 1-1 draw between South Africa and the Czech Republic earlier that day. Finishing first means Mexico will stay on home soil for the round of 32, facing a third-placed team in Mexico City.

South Korea currently sits second in the group with three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa remain in contention with one point each.

Co-hosts Canada moved closer to advancing to the last 32 after dominating a depleted Qatar side 6-0, marking their first-ever World Cup win. The victory came at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, with Prime Minister Mark Carney among an enthusiastic crowd donning replica Canada jerseys.

Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch, saw his team run rampant, needing only a point against Switzerland to top Group B. Juventus striker Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, supported by goals from Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and an own goal from Mohammad Manai.

Switzerland revived their World Cup hopes by thumping Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. South Africa managed a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic in Atlanta.
