Manchester United Firm on Bruno Fernandes Amid Galatasaray Interest
Manchester United have no intention of letting their captain walk out the door just as the season begins – no matter how bold the bid.
According to The Independent, United are preparing to dismiss what has been labelled an “audacious approach” from Galatasaray for Bruno Fernandes, with the Turkish champions assembling a sizeable financial package to tempt the midfielder to Istanbul. The answer from Old Trafford is clear: not for sale.
Release clause looms, but United stand firm
Fernandes, 31, is entering the final 12 months of the three‑year contract he signed in 2024, though United hold an option to extend that deal by another season. Built into that agreement is a £56million release clause, but it can only be activated by clubs outside England.
That detail is what keeps Galatasaray interested. It does not, for now, change United’s stance.
The Portuguese playmaker has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent years, with the club forced more than once to fend off suitors for their most influential outfield player. Back in May, The Mirror described Fernandes as a “dream target” for Galatasaray, a club that has not shied away from big spending after landing high‑profile names such as Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane in recent windows.
The latest move from Istanbul fits that pattern: ambitious, expensive, and aimed at a marquee name. United, though, are planning the season with Fernandes at the heart of it.
Key to Carrick’s plans
With the summer window ticking into its final weeks and the Premier League kicking off on Friday, United have drawn a hard line. Fernandes will not be allowed to leave.
Michael Carrick views his captain as central to United’s push on multiple fronts, particularly as they return to the Champions League for the first time since 2024. Fernandes is expected to carry a heavy load again – creator, goalscorer, standard‑bearer – in a side that finished third in the Premier League last season, their best placing since 2022/23.
Carrick’s task now is to turn that step forward into something more sustained in 2026/27. Doing it without his captain was never on the agenda.
Contract questions can wait
For all the noise around Galatasaray, there is no immediate move from United to hand Fernandes a fresh deal before the new campaign. That position may soften once the season settles and the club weigh up their longer‑term planning.
Fernandes, for his part, has spoken like a man who still sees his future in Manchester, at least beyond this summer.
“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said last month. “But I don't think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won't have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club's history brings that responsibility.
“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let's say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”
Those are not the words of a captain angling for the exit. They sound more like a manifesto.
United’s Champions League return begins with domestic business: an opening‑day trip to Hull City on Saturday, August 22, kicking off at 12:30pm. Galatasaray may test their resolve again before the window closes, but for now, Fernandes’ stage is set – and it is still Old Trafford.
