Joao Cancelo Forces Permanent Return to Barcelona
Joao Cancelo is finally back where he always felt he belonged. This time, for good.
After months of stalled talks and hard bargaining with Al-Hilal, Barcelona have accelerated a deal that had been drifting in limbo. What looked stuck has been pushed over the line in a matter of days, with the Portuguese full-back now on the verge of being officially announced as a permanent Barça player.
The turning point was not on a negotiation table, but in Cancelo’s own stance.
From deadlock to done
Al-Hilal held firm for months. They started by asking around €10 million, then pushed that demand up towards €15 million. Barcelona hesitated. Cancelo waited. Everyone held their positions.
Then the dynamic flipped.
Cancelo agreed to terminate his contract and give up part of his salary to make the move happen. He wanted Barcelona, and only Barcelona, and he was willing to pay his own price for it.
He travelled back to the city earlier today to close the final details. No more loans. No more uncertainty. Just the club he calls home.
“Either Barcelona or nothing”
The moment he landed in Barcelona, the cameras were waiting. So were the questions about the season ahead.
"We have a very strong team this season! Finally, I'm where I wanted to be," he said, leaving no doubt about his intentions or his state of mind.
Cancelo also revealed how he prepared for this moment, refusing to switch off even during his break.
"I trained hard for a full week to be ready for Barcelona."
The most striking part, though, was his account of the conversation with Deco, the club’s sporting figure at the heart of the deal.
"I told Deco: Either I come here, or I'll stay there for a year without playing while continuing to receive my salary."
That was the ultimatum. Not to Barcelona, but to his own career path. He then underlined the sacrifice he had already made to push the transfer over the line.
"I gave up part of my salary, but my choice was either signing for Barcelona or nothing."
A different kind of loyalty
At Barcelona, loyalty is usually spoken of in the language of La Masia. Homegrown talents. Lifelong culers. Players who grew up with the badge.
Cancelo is different, yet his devotion is starting to sound just as intense.
Year after year, he pushed for a move to Catalonia. Each time he arrived, it was on loan. Each time, he played under the pressure of knowing he could impress and still be sent back.
Now that weight has gone.
This time, he comes on a permanent deal. No exit clause to worry about. No parent club to return to. Just the chance to settle, to attack and defend with freedom, and to live out the role he has chased for years: not just as a visitor, but as a full-time Barcelona player in the club of his dreams.
