Luka Modric Commits to AC Milan Until 2027 at Age 40

Luka Modric, now 40 years old, has decided to continue his career with AC Milan, signing a new contract that keeps him at the club until mid-2027. The announcement came directly from the club’s official channels, surprising many who expected the veteran midfielder to consider retirement or a move elsewhere.

His previous deal expired on June 30, 2026, which made him available on a free transfer. Despite his age and earlier hints that he would wait until after the 2026 World Cup to make a decision, Modric chose to stay in Italy. He will turn 41 this summer but shows no signs of slowing down.

“Since his arrival, Luka has been a key player in AC Milan’s midfield and has placed his experience and qualities, both on and off the pitch, at the service of the team with humility and great passion,” the club stated on their website.“The Croat, one of the best and most iconic players in world football, will continue his journey in the AC Milan shirt with the ambition of reaching new and important milestones. Modrić will continue to wear the number 14 shirt at AC Milan.”

This means Modric remains an integral part of the Rossoneri’s plans, especially under new head coach Rúben Amorim, who is tasked with ushering in a fresh chapter for the club.

A Smooth Transition from Real Madrid to Milan

Modric joined AC Milan in the summer of 2025 on a free transfer after ending his lengthy and successful spell with Real Madrid. In his first season in Serie A, he quickly became a midfield mainstay.

Over 37 competitive games for Milan, he found the net twice and assisted three times. His performances extended beyond club football; at the 2026 World Cup, Modric played all four matches for Croatia before they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Portugal.
