Spain Coach Luis de la Fuente Backs Barcelona Trio Ahead of World Cup Quarter-Final

Spain's head coach, Luis de la Fuente, has expressed strong confidence in Barcelona talents Pedri, Lamine Yamal, and Gavi as the national team prepares for its FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final clash with Belgium.

These remarks came shortly after France secured their spot in the semi-finals by defeating Morocco, leaving Spain eager to join them in the tournament's final four.

Pedri’s Steady Influence

When asked about Pedri’s recent performances, De la Fuente highlighted the midfielder’s consistency within the squad. He acknowledged that while Pedri might not always deliver the flashiest moments, his contributions remain highly effective.

“Very good. Whether he’s on top form or not, he always sets a very good tone. It probably wasn’t the most spectacular performance, but it was certainly effective. And those who came on benefited from that work.”

De la Fuente emphasized the team’s ability to adapt when players aren’t at full strength, praising Pedri's regular high level of play for Spain.

Lamine Yamal’s Growing Role

Regarding young forward Lamine Yamal, the coach noted the player’s motivation and potential but warned against letting excitement turn into pressure.

“Yes. I think he’s really motivated. That’s why we need to keep him calm, so that doesn’t turn into anxiety. We know the best Lamine is yet to come because he hasn’t quite reached that moment of brilliance yet.”

De la Fuente also applauded Yamal’s defensive efforts against tough opposition and said the attacker will soon unlock his full offensive potential.

Gavi’s Ambitious Dream

The conversation turned to Gavi, who recently shared his aspiration to score a bicycle kick in the World Cup final. The coach welcomed this goal as a sign of belief and confidence.

“Well, I’d be delighted because it would mean we’d reached the final, and if Gavi – whom we love so much – were to score it on top of that. That just shows he believes we can get there. Gavi is a fantastic lad and a great footballer.”

Spain now looks ahead to a pivotal match against Belgium, relying on the skill and mindset of their Barcelona stars to push forward.
