Leeds United in Talks to Sign Manchester City Goalkeeper James Trafford

Leeds United are reportedly advancing discussions to acquire James Trafford, a goalkeeper currently on the fringes at Manchester City. After losing Karl Darlow to Manchester United on a free transfer, Leeds finds itself seeking stronger competition for Lucas Perri.

Initial rumors linked Japan's Zion Suzuki with a move from Parma to Elland Road, but that interest has since cooled. Instead, Leeds appears focused on securing Trafford, who is said to be eager for a switch away from the Etihad Stadium.

Progress on Trafford Negotiations

The Athletic reports Leeds is making strides in convincing the England international to join their ranks in Yorkshire. Newcastle United, once considered a contender, seems to have dropped out of the race for his signature.

Last season, Trafford featured in 17 matches across all competitions for Manchester City, though only four were Premier League appearances. Still, his role contributed to City's triumphs in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup. The 23-year-old had cost City between £27m and £31m last summer when signed from Burnley, and it’s likely City will seek a similar fee.

Leeds' Ambitions for 2026-27 Season

After rallying in the latter half of the 2025-26 campaign to maintain their Premier League status, Leeds aims higher this coming season, targeting a top-half finish. Recent signings like defender Tarik Muharemovic for £34m and Fulham’s Harry Wilson on a free transfer may already hint at smarter recruitment strategies.

Should Trafford complete his move, he would likely represent an upgrade over Darlow, especially since he’s viewed as a potential future number one for England.
