Kylian Mbappé Responds to Criticism and Comparisons Ahead of Real Madrid's Champions League Clash

The French forward acknowledged the team needs to improve its work without possession but rejected the notion that he and Vinícius Júnior should bear the sole responsibility.

Mbappé Challenges Comparison to Dembélé and Raphinha

During Monday's pre-match press conference, questions arose about Real Madrid's pressing strategy, with comparisons made between Mbappé, Vinícius, and other forwards like Ousmane Dembélé and Raphinha, who have received praise for their defensive contributions.

Mbappé quickly dismissed this comparison, highlighting differences in roles and strengths among the players. He stressed that defensive duties should be a collective effort rather than focused on just two forwards.

"Only me and Vini?" Mbappé responded. "I can play the fool and tell you that I score more goals than the two you mentioned, and that they have to score more goals to be like me. Everyone is different."

Real Madrid Must Improve Together, Says Mbappé

The forward admitted that improvements in defense are necessary but insisted it is a shared responsibility across the entire squad.

"Of course we have to improve, we have to improve," he said. "And I think it’s completely natural how each player is."

He added that he prefers not to be compared directly to other forwards because his style includes many unique elements.

"I want to do things intelligently and say that, of course, I have to improve and all that. But I don’t like to compare because I think I do many things that others don’t."

Mbappé broadened the discussion beyond attackers, emphasizing that every Real Madrid player must contribute defensively.

"I agree that, of course, I and all the Real Madrid players have to improve in this aspect to help the defense so that we can concede fewer chances and fewer goals," he explained.

Mbappé also pointed out that better ball control could help Real Madrid both create scoring opportunities and reduce pressure on their defense.

"But I also think that we need to manage things better with the ball to create more scoring opportunities," he said.

He described ongoing improvement as a constant demand for a top-level club aiming for global success.

"That’s the life of a top-level team that wants to be the best in the world," Mbappé remarked. "There are many things you have to improve every day, and that’s just how it is."
