Kroenke's Challenge: Arsenal's Ambition for Continued Success
Stan and Josh Kroenke have thrown down a bold challenge to Arsenal’s supporters and players alike: last season was unforgettable, but it cannot be the peak.
On the eve of Arsenal’s Premier League title defence, with Coventry City visiting north London on Friday night, the club’s co-chairs used their joint programme notes to fuse gratitude with ambition, urging the fanbase to turn a historic year into a sustained era of success.
“Etched in our hearts” – but not enough
The Kroenkes described the 2025/26 campaign as one that “will forever be etched in our hearts”, the season that finally ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown and saw Arsenal crowned FIFA Women’s World Champions.
Holding the trophy at Selhurst Park, they said, was only part of the story. The real magic came in the aftermath: the outpouring of emotion from north London streets to fan gatherings across continents, scenes they felt underlined Arsenal’s reach and identity.
From their perspective, those celebrations did more than mark a title. They showcased a club that, in their words, brought “pride, inspiration and belonging” to a global Arsenal family, with images of red and white spilling out from London into cities and communities far beyond England.
Parade after pain
The title parade through north London carried a different kind of weight. It arrived after the sting of Champions League final disappointment, and the Kroenkes framed that day as a moment of healing and unity, a reminder that club and supporters move together through both heartbreak and triumph.
It was a victory lap, but also a reset. The message was clear: the club had climbed, fallen short in Europe, then climbed again — and the bond with the supporters had only tightened.
“Champions don’t stand still”
That emotional backdrop did not soften the owners’ stance on what comes next. The tone quickly switched from nostalgia to drive.
“While we will cherish the memories of last season, our focus is now on building on our success this season and beyond. Champions don’t stand still, they evolve and keep moving forward,” they wrote, drawing a line under the celebrations and turning eyes firmly to the defence of the title.
They pointed to the summer as proof of that evolution. Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi and David Raya returned from the World Cup as winners with Spain, further strengthening the sense that Arsenal’s core is operating at the highest level of the game. The Community Shield victory over Manchester City was flagged as another marker of momentum rather than a mere curtain-raiser.
Squad reshaped, structure reinforced
The message also acknowledged the churn that comes with progress. The departures of Leandro Trossard, Christian Norgaard, Jakub Kiwior, Karl Hein, Rosa Kafaji, Jenna Nighswonger and Laila Harbert were noted, a quiet nod to the end of one chapter for several players who have contributed to the club’s recent rise.
Attention then turned to the arrivals tasked with pushing Arsenal “one (or more) better” across all teams. Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier and Piero Hincapie headline the senior men’s additions, while Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler, Lisa Baum, Isabella Damm and Misa Rodriguez bolster a women’s side already operating at world champion level.
Off the pitch, Pascal De Maesschalck’s appointment as Academy Director was highlighted as a key structural move, underlining the owners’ belief that the next wave of talent must be nurtured as carefully as the current one is deployed.
A rallying cry before kick-off
As Arsenal prepare to walk out as defending champions, the Kroenkes closed with a direct salute to the supporters and a pointed hope for the months ahead. They thanked “our Arsenal family – those here tonight and those tuning in around the globe – for your continued loyalty and support,” and made no attempt to hide their expectations.
The aim is not just to relive last May. It is to surpass it.
“We hope at end of the season we will be celebrating wildly together again and going one (or more) better across our teams,” they wrote, before signing off with a line that will echo around the Emirates and far beyond on opening night.
“Enjoy the game and come on you Gunners!”
