Arteta Confirms Arsenal's Active Transfer Pursuit Ahead of Season Opener

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal are far from finished in the transfer market as the Premier League champions prepare to launch their title defence tonight.

The Gunners begin the 2026/27 campaign at home to newly promoted Coventry City, with Frank Lampard bringing his side to a North London braced for another tilt at the crown. The squad already looks different – and more expensive.

Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier have arrived to bolster a group that went all the way last season, while Ezri Konsa has completed a £51m move from Aston Villa. The England defender has finalised his switch to the capital, with an official announcement from the club imminent.

Arteta, though, is pushing for more.

“We are really active in the market, I think I mentioned that a few days ago. The ambition is to improve the squad,” he said in his pre‑match press conference, underlining that Arsenal’s recruitment drive is still in full swing ahead of the September 1 deadline.

One area dominates his thinking.

“We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender; that's clear. So we are trying to reinforce that area. Whenever we're ready, we'll announce something.”

The need is obvious. Saliba’s absence rips a hole in the defensive structure that underpinned last season’s title run, and Arsenal want at least one more body at the back. At the other end of the pitch, the club are also understood to be targeting another forward, with several fringe players expected to move on before the window closes.

New faces, new energy

If the squad still feels incomplete, the early impact of the summer signings has given Arteta exactly what he craves: edge, competition, and a jolt of freshness inside a group that has already climbed the mountain.

“Yes, that's what the new signings bring: a new energy, something to prove in front of them as well, and obviously a competition,” he said.

When he talks about Guimaraes, Tzolis and Meslier, the admiration is clear. Proven quality, proven personality.

“And when you talk about players of that quality and leadership, the same with Christos [Tzolis] or with Illan [Meslier], what they've done since day one, I think it lifts the level of everybody.”

The champions walk out tonight with a target on their backs and a manager still demanding more – from the market, from his defence, and from a squad that now has fresh talent snapping at established heels.
