Hütter Confirms Santos for Cup Match Amid Goalkeeper Debate

Adi Hütter is standing by his goalkeeper. For now.

The returning Eintracht Frankfurt coach confirmed that Brazilian stopper Santos will start in the upcoming cup match, even after the 0-7 humiliation at Brentford FC that has thrown the club’s goalkeeping situation back into the spotlight.

“The Brazilian will play,” Hütter said on Wednesday, before deliberately stepping away from any long-term commitment. “Then we will see what else happens in future.”

That last line will echo loudly around Frankfurt.

0-7 in London, and a debate reignited

The heavy defeat in their final pre-season friendly at Premier League side Brentford did more than dent confidence. It reignited a debate that has followed Santos for months.

Media reports in Germany claim Hütter has lost faith in the 23-year-old, and the list of potential replacements is already on the table. Noah Atubolu of SC Freiburg and former Eintracht favourite Lukas Hradecky, currently at AS Monaco, are being discussed as transfer options.

Hütter, though, refused to be drawn into transfer talk – not about goalkeepers, not about any other position. He shut that door firmly, at least in public.

Koch cleared after concussion scare

There was at least one clear positive for the Austrian: Robin Koch is set to lead the side in the cup.

The captain and defensive organiser suffered a slight concussion during the Brentford debacle, raising fears he might miss the competitive opener. Hütter moved quickly to calm those worries.

“I assume he will play,” he said, underlining Koch’s importance to a back line that was torn apart in London.

“Warning shot” before the real games begin

Hütter did not sugar-coat what happened against Brentford. He sat down with his players, went through the performance, and made his stance unmistakably clear.

“Something like that is absolutely not on in that form,” he said. A “clear analysis” followed. For the coach, the 0-7 was not just a bad day – it was a “warning shot”.

Now comes the real test. Santos keeps the gloves for the cup. Koch is expected to marshal the defence. The result will not just decide progression; it may shape how long Hütter’s patience with his current No. 1 truly lasts.
