Getafe Negotiates for Bajcetic as Liverpool Faces Late Transfer Decision

Getafe have opened talks with Liverpool over a deal for Stefan Bajcetic, with the midfielder’s Anfield future back under the spotlight in the final two weeks of the summer window.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that the LaLiga side are in discussions to sign the 21-year-old, with the “formula” of the move still being worked on. At this stage, it’s unclear whether Getafe are pushing for a loan or a permanent transfer.

What is clear is how far and how fast Bajcetic’s situation has shifted.

From derby star to injury victim

Not long after the 2022 World Cup, Bajcetic burst into Liverpool’s first team as an 18-year-old and looked like he had been there for years. He brought bite and composure to the midfield, and his standout display in a derby win in early 2023 felt like the start of something significant.

Then the injuries came.

Since the tail end of the 2024/25 season, the Spaniard hasn’t kicked a competitive ball. Momentum vanished. So did the chance to build on that early promise.

He has only recently rejoined full training and travelled with Andoni Iraola’s squad on their pre-season tour of the United States. It should have been a fresh audition under a new manager. Instead, he didn’t feature in any of Liverpool’s pre-season games, losing a crucial window to stake his claim.

Pecking order problems

While Bajcetic has been fighting his way back to fitness, others have surged ahead. Trey Nyoni’s excellent form has pushed the youngster further down the midfield queue, and even the potential sale of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan is not expected to catapult him back into Iraola’s plans.

For a player who once looked like a central pillar of Liverpool’s midfield rebuild, the reality is stark: he is now on the fringes, and game time at Anfield looks scarce.

That is where Getafe come in.

What’s at stake for club and player

From Liverpool’s perspective, the key questions are obvious. Is this a loan to sharpen a talent they still believe in, or a clean break with a player whose development has stalled through no fault of his own? What kind of offer arrives, and how does it fit into their wider midfield strategy?

Without those details – length of deal, option or obligation to buy, fee – it is impossible to fully judge whether sanctioning an exit makes sense for the club.

For Bajcetic, the calculation feels more straightforward.

After months of “injury hell”, simply training again with his teammates is a relief. But training is not playing. At 21, and with his early promise still fresh in the memory, the lure of regular football in LaLiga will be strong if Getafe can offer it.

The talks are open. The window is ticking. The next fortnight may decide whether Bajcetic’s revival happens in front of the Kop – or back in Spain, wearing Getafe blue.
