Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumí as New Defensive Anchor

Juventus have their new defensive anchor – and they paid decisively to get him.

The Turin club have completed the signing of Jhon Lucumí from Bologna, sealing a deal worth an initial €18 million plus a further €2 million in potential bonuses. The Colombian centre-back has signed a four-year contract, earning €3 million net per season, a clear signal that Juventus see him as a cornerstone of their back line for the coming years.

Crucially, Lucumí wanted this move. Despite interest from other clubs, he pushed for Juventus, making the Bianconeri his priority as soon as talks advanced. For a club rebuilding its identity and structure, that kind of commitment matters.

“Juventus are signing a player at the peak of his powers, ready to make an immediate contribution to the team ahead of the 2026/27 season. Welcome to Juventus, Jhon!” read the club’s announcement on their official channels – a rare flourish that underlines how highly they rate him.

This is not a late bloomer suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Lucumí broke into professional football at just 17 with Deportivo Cali, then sharpened his game in Europe with Genk from 2018, where he grew into one of the standout defenders in Belgian football. Strong in duels, composed on the ball, and tactically disciplined, he arrives in Italy as a finished product rather than a raw prospect.

Bologna saw that early and built their defence around him. Since joining the Rossoblù in the summer of 2022, Lucumí has been a constant presence, racking up 152 appearances in all competitions across four seasons. He did not just defend; he led. He tasted Champions League football with Bologna as well, even scoring one of his two goals for the club at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara on a European night that underlined his growing stature.

Now comes the step up.

With the transfer signed off, Lucumí will go straight into tactical sessions with his new Juventus teammates, tasked with bedding into a back line that is being reshaped for a new cycle. The club expect him to slot in quickly, bringing the same reliability and authority that made him indispensable in Emilia-Romagna.

The timing is tight, but deliberate. Juventus open their 2026-27 Serie A campaign away to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, and all signs point to that match being Lucumí’s competitive debut in black and white. If all goes to plan, he will not just feature – he will marshal the defence from day one.

A new season, a new leader at the back, and a Colombian centre-half stepping into the glare of Turin. Now it is over to Lucumí to turn a carefully planned transfer into a defining chapter of Juventus’ next era.
