Gavi Says Paredes Should Not Face Suspension After World Cup Final Incident

Spain midfielder Gavi has voiced his opinion that Argentina's Leandro Paredes should not be suspended for his role in the altercation after the World Cup 2026 final. The incident unfolded as players from both sides clashed following Spain's 1-0 victory.

The confrontation involved Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and Argentina's assistant coach Roberto Ayala. During the scuffle, Paredes appeared to push Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat. Gavi, who was an unused substitute, attempted to step in but was shoved to the ground by Almada. Later, Paredes forced the Barcelona midfielder down by placing his hand in Garcia's face.

Gavi's Perspective on the Incident

"I don't think [Paredes] should be suspended," Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE. "I understand it doesn't show a good image for kids, but football has a physical and aggressive side too. The logical thing would have been to send him off during the match, and that's it. In the end, it's all part of football and must remain that way."

Ayala's Response

Roberto Ayala addressed his involvement, clarifying that what appeared as a punch towards Spain's Dani Olmo was actually a push.

"When the match ended, I saw a scuffle and went over to stop it from getting worse because that's not who we are," Ayala said to Capital Radio in Valencia. "I take responsibility for my actions. My intention was simply to separate them, nothing more."

Clarifications from FIFA

There was confusion when FIFA's commentator system mistakenly reported that Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for pushing Garcia. This red card entry was later removed, and FIFA confirmed no immediate disciplinary action was taken against Paredes during the game.

Argentina's Enzo Fernandez did receive a second yellow card and was dismissed during added time in the second half.
