France's national team often faces debate about the origins of its players. Many think that most of Les Bleus' squad members were born outside France, but that’s not quite true. The Athletic reports that 23 out of the 26 players on France’s World Cup roster were actually born in France.

Nationality rules in soccer allow a player to represent a country if they meet one of several criteria: being born there, having a parent or grandparent born there, or living there for a certain number of years. This can make eligibility complex and sometimes confusing.

Players Born Outside France

There are only three players on the French roster born outside of France:

• Michael Olise: Born in London, England, Olise has been impressive during the 2026 World Cup with five assists. His mother is French-Algerian, and despite options to represent England, Algeria, or Nigeria, he chose France. Olise explained his choice by naming French legends like Zidane and Henry as inspirations, and feeling a natural connection to France from visiting as a child. He has scored seven goals in 23 international appearances.
• Marcus Thuram: Thuram was born in Parma, Italy while his father, Lilian Thuram, played there. Lilian hails from Guadeloupe, a French territory. Marcus holds citizenship for both Guadeloupe and France but picked France likely because of his father’s legacy and better prospects. He has three goals in 35 caps for Les Bleus.
• Brice Samba: The goalkeeper was born in Linzolo, Republic of the Congo and moved to France at a young age. After gaining French citizenship, Samba opted to play for France and has earned four caps so far.

Despite the discussions, France tops the list for having the most players born within its borders participating in the 2026 World Cup. According to The Athletic, 99 players from 13 countries were born in France. Here’s how it compares with other nations:

To represent a country in the World Cup, a player must meet one of these criteria:

• Born in the country or territory
• Has a biological parent born there

This explains why some players might be born in one place but choose to represent another nation. For example, Olise, Thuram, and Samba all fit this pattern for France. Morocco’s team includes six players born in France who play for Morocco because of their heritage.
