Domino's 'Emergency Pizzas for Red Card' Promotion Explained

Domino's had set up a special offer before the tournament started. The deal promised that if any player from the US men's national team received a red card during the World Cup, selected entrants would win free or discounted pizza coupons.

"We’re definitely not rooting for one," the Domino's promotion said, "But if the U.S. is handed a red card, there’s nothing like a free pizza to help make it a little better."

Fans needed to register by June 10 to qualify. After Balogun's red card on July 1, Domino's randomly picked up to 63,371 participants to receive a coupon for a free medium pizza with two toppings. Everyone else who signed up received a consolation coupon offering 20% off specific menu items.

The Incident That Triggered the Promotion

Balogun was shown a red card in the 64th minute for what the referee judged as serious foul play — his studs landed on the ankle of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. The on-field official initially refrained from issuing a card, but following a VAR review led by Brazilian referee Raphael Claus, the decision was overturned.

The call was contentious since Balogun was actively contesting the ball and showed no intent to harm. His sending off left the US down to ten men for the rest of the game and means he will miss the next match against Belgium. There is no appeal for red card decisions at this stage of the World Cup.
