Erling Haaland Matches Aguero’s Champions League Record as Man City Beat Porto 2-0

Erling Haaland delivered a pair of goals to help Manchester City secure a tough 2-0 victory against Porto in their Champions League opener at Estadio do Dragao. The Norwegian striker’s brace equaled Sergio Aguero’s club record for most goals scored in the competition.

City started their group stage with an important win on Tuesday night. Haaland opened the scoring with a precise header and later added a close-range goal late in the second half. This result kept Manchester City unbeaten this season under Enzo Maresca.

Haaland Praises Team's Grit

"It was a difficult fight, man against man. They are a top team, honestly they are impressive. They play amazing football so well done to them," said Haaland speaking to Amazon Prime. "With all the pressure on us, we had to deliver on the biggest stage. That's what we did today. I think honestly we controlled the first half. We created a lot of chances. I could have easily had more goals, but in the second half, we scored and then they pushed us for about 25 minutes. We managed to hold through and finish the game."

He added that winning matches like these is essential to avoid pressure later in the tournament and praised the team's strong start to the campaign.

Record-Equalling Performance

By scoring twice, Haaland reached his 36th Champions League goal for Manchester City, matching the club legend Sergio Aguero as the joint-top scorer in the competition for the club. He achieved this milestone in just 40 games.

"We have to demand a lot from each other, and we have to win games. At Man City you have to win games and trophies," Haaland said when discussing the team's mentality.

Asked if Maresca would be pleased with their performance in a hostile stadium, Haaland replied, "I hope so. We won away in a difficult game. Look at the atmosphere, it was unreal at times. I hope he’s happy."
