Last month, it was revealed that Trump would present the World Cup trophy to the winners after the final. This echoed a prior incident when Trump inserted himself into Chelsea's Club World Cup celebration last year, refusing to step aside as the team lifted the trophy.

Earlier Criticism of Spain Adds to the Tension

The tension deepened considering Trump's remarks about Spain just days earlier. On July 8, during a news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Trump condemned Spain for its NATO contributions, calling the country "a wasted cause" and labeling its leadership "hopeless" and "bad people." He declared a desire to cut all trade and visits with Spain.

Given these harsh statements, it must have been uncomfortable for Trump to smile and hand the trophy to a team representing a nation he had publicly criticized so fiercely less than two weeks prior.
