Cristian Volpato Faces Drug Test After Speeding Incidents in Sydney

Cristian Volpato, who gained attention during the World Cup playing for Australia, reportedly tested positive for cocaine following two speeding stops in Sydney. The 22-year-old midfielder appeared three times for Australia at the tournament after switching from Italy.

New South Wales police revealed that Volpato was caught driving at 109 km/h on the Anzac Bridge around 1am Friday, exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h. A roadside drug test administered at the scene showed signs of cocaine use. Authorities said a second sample is being analyzed, and his driver's license has been suspended for six months.

Earlier that same night, at about 11pm Thursday, Volpato had been stopped for speeding as well, going more than 20 km/h over the limit. He received an infringement notice and passed an alcohol test at that time.

Volpato currently plays for Sassuolo in Italy. Born in Sydney, he initially represented Italy at the Under-20 level after joining Roma in 2020 before switching allegiance to Australia for the World Cup.
