Christian Pulisic Injury Update: Will He Play Against Australia?

Christian Pulisic’s Status Ahead of USMNT vs Australia

The U.S. men's national team trained in Irvine, California, preparing for their second World Cup match against Australia in Seattle on Friday afternoon. Christian Pulisic has been a notable absence from full training sessions this week, described repeatedly as "day to day." A U.S. Soccer spokesperson confirmed he was completing a "modified training session" as he works back to full fitness while the rest of the squad prepares for the upcoming match.

The Origin of Pulisic’s Injury

Pulisic’s injury traces back to the opening game against Paraguay, where he took a kick aggravating a pre-existing left calf issue. Coach Mauricio Pochettino pulled him off at halftime as a precaution and substituted Sebastian Berhalter in his place. Despite not joining full training 72 hours before the next game, teammates like Tyler Adams tried to ease concerns.

"Christian will be ready, everyone. Let’s relax," said Adams. "I think he picked up a knock a few days before the match and got kicked in the same spot again during the match."

After the 4–1 victory over Paraguay, Pulisic told FOX Sports, "I just got a bit of a kick in the first half. I’m really hoping that it’s nothing... Taking a little bit of precaution today, but I’m hoping I’ll be fine in the next few days."

Details on Pulisic’s Injury History

The current problem involves Pulisic’s left calf, though U.S. Soccer has offered no further specifics beyond confirming it was a pre-existing condition. The 27-year-old has struggled with various injuries before, including missing 56 days last season with AC Milan due to multiple issues. Earlier this year, a strain in his thigh and gluteal muscles sidelined him for eight days, and bursitis in his hip kept him out for 17 days. Soft-tissue problems have been a recurring challenge throughout his career.

On Monday, Pochettino noted Pulisic looked "good" briefly during training before leaving early. Teammate Tim Weah expressed optimism: "I think he’ll be ready for the game and ready to be with the team, so just praying to God he feels 100% fit. He’ll be needed."

Possible Return Timeline

No official return date for Pulisic exists yet. There remains a chance he could play or even start on Friday, but final confirmation is expected Thursday when Pochettino addresses the media before the match versus Australia. On Wednesday, Pulisic trained alone with two trainers while the rest of the squad completed a full session. According to The Athletic, he performed single-leg jumps but returned to the gym once media access ended after 15 minutes.

If Pulisic cannot suit up against Australia, his next likely opportunity to return would be the Group D finale against Türkiye on June 28 at SoFi Stadium, where the USMNT kicked off their tournament campaign.
