Canadian Fans Take Advantage of Qatar’s Complimentary World Cup Tickets

Fans supporting Canada have managed to obtain some of the free World Cup tickets originally intended for Qatar supporters. This comes ahead of Thursday’s crucial Group B match in Vancouver, where Canada faces off against co-hosts Qatar.

The Qatar Football Association teamed up with their government to finance travel for 1,000 fans from the Middle East to attend matches across North America during the World Cup. For the tournament opener in San Francisco against Switzerland, they chartered three Qatar Airways flights to bring supporters, covering travel expenses and accommodation for roughly 800 people. Despite this, securing fans’ presence in Canada while maintaining fully funded tickets has proven challenging.

Ticket Lottery Opens Door for Unexpected Fans

Qatar fans registered for a lottery to claim seats on these flights. However, the tickets also appeared on social media promotions aimed at North American audiences. According to Sports Illustrated, Canadian fans exploited a loosely controlled ticket distribution system to claim many of these seats.

To participate, fans simply had to register on the Qatar FA’s website, providing FIFA ticket account information along with personal details like name, address, email, and the Arab country they identified with. There was no strict verification; anyone could choose any Arab nation, whether they had genuine ties or not.

"I just decided to sign up, said I was Arab, picked my family's country, and sent the request," shared one anonymous fan. "They never asked for proof, not even a birth certificate. It was just claiming you’re Arab and selecting a country."

Sources estimate that over 150 Canadian fans secured these free tickets, planning to cheer for Canada in their national colors. These tickets provide a stark contrast to the steep prices seen on primary and resale markets. Outside these free offers, the lowest priced tickets available were around $80, typically reserved for members of Canadian supporters’ group The Voyageurs.

Those lucky enough to receive tickets through Qatar’s scheme were also given official merchandise to wear during the game. Canadians attending are expected to arrive fully decked out in their own gear, hoping to witness their team win its first-ever men’s World Cup match after earning a draw in Toronto.

"There will be some genuine Qatar fans, maybe even Arab residents who want to support the team," the same fan added. "But I think most of the crowd will be Canadian."

Qatar Supporters Show Up in Numbers, But Face Growing Competition

Qatar fans made a strong showing during the opening fixture against Switzerland, marching through San Francisco streets. Reports from SFGate noted attendance was mandatory for those staying in city hotels, optional for others nearer the stadium.

In Vancouver, Qatar’s Ambassador to Canada, Tariq Ali Faraj Al Ansari, confirmed the diplomatic mission secured all logistics to support the national team and traveling fans. Hundreds of Qatar supporters are still expected at the stadium for the Group B clash, but many seats will likely belong to Canadian fans.

Both teams face pressure to secure a win, which would boost their chances of progressing and potentially topping the group before the final matchday.
