Barcelona's Ongoing Interest in Marcus Rashford Amid United's Dilemma

Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it. The Spanish giants remain in regular contact with the forward’s representatives as they weigh up their attacking options and explore a move that could yet drag him back to the Nou Camp from Manchester United, TEAMtalk understands.

Rashford is back in United colours for the first time in 18 months after Barcelona declined to trigger their €30m (£26m/$35m) option to buy him outright. That decision came despite a productive season in Catalonia, where the England international racked up 28 goal contributions across all competitions.

Barcelona had always leaned towards another loan. With two years left on Rashford’s United deal, they preferred to delay a permanent commitment. United refused. The Premier League club made it clear they would only entertain a full sale, not another temporary stint.

So Rashford has reported back to Old Trafford, where he now stands as the club’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick and his staff have moved quickly to fold him back into the first-team group and, as previously revealed, are open to using him this season.

That does not mean the story is over.

There is still a live possibility Rashford leaves before the transfer window shuts, with Barcelona firmly in the chase. His camp has fielded interest from other clubs, but the financial demands attached to any deal for the 26-year-old mean only a handful of teams can seriously join the conversation.

Barcelona are one of them. And sources have outlined the striking scenario in which the forward could yet make a shock return to Catalonia.

Barcelona’s attacking rebuild keeps Rashford in play

Since last season ended, Barcelona’s need for firepower has only grown. Rashford’s loan spell finished and he went back to England. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have departed. Highly rated Roony Bardghji has been ruled out for the entire campaign through injury.

Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have arrived to freshen up the frontline, but the work is not done. Talks with Rashford’s entourage have stayed open, a line of communication Barcelona are in no rush to cut.

Rashford would not hesitate to go back. A return to Catalunya appeals. The sticking point sits in Manchester. United’s stance on another loan – even one that carries an obligation to buy – remains unclear and is a major obstacle.

Complicating everything is Barcelona’s drawn-out pursuit of Julian Alvarez. The Catalan club are still pushing to prise the Argentinian international from Atletico Madrid, yet there is no sign of the Spanish side softening their position.

Atletico have repeatedly stressed Alvarez is “not for sale” to Barcelona. That hard line has created a stalemate and is choking off one of Barca’s preferred routes to rebuilding their attack.

If that deadlock holds, Rashford’s name stays on the table. His profile, versatility and familiarity with the club’s environment make him a logical alternative if Alvarez cannot be prised away.

United weigh wages, dressing-room value and market reality

For United, the calculation is more nuanced. Rashford is back in the fold, training and preparing as part of Carrick’s plans. The club is currently willing to carry one of the heaviest wage packets in the Premier League.

Inside Old Trafford, though, there is debate. Is it sustainable to keep such a high earner if a serious offer lands? Would a substantial proposal from Barcelona or another elite club make more sense for the long-term rebuild?

Those questions linger as the window ticks on.

For now, Rashford is a United player, back in red and part of Carrick’s squad. Barcelona, though, have not slammed the door. They are waiting, watching, and working in the background.

If the Alvarez chase stays frozen and United’s internal arguments tilt towards a sale, this saga could yet produce one more twist.
