Barcelona Secures Rodri Transfer with Medical in Catalonia

FC Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri has finally broken through the deadlock, with the Catalan club striking an agreement in principle with Manchester City for the Spain captain.

The deal for the 30-year-old midfielder is set at €76.5 million, with €60 million guaranteed and the remaining sum tied to performance-related add-ons. All that stands between Rodri and a move to the Camp Nou now are the final formalities.

Medical moved to Barcelona

Manchester City have already granted Rodri permission to travel to Barcelona, but the plan for how and where he would complete his medical has been tweaked at the last moment.

Initially, Barcelona expected the 2026 FIFA World Cup winner to undergo his medical tests in England today, then fly out once everything was signed off. That schedule has been scrapped.

Journalist Achraf Ben Ayad reports that Rodri will instead complete his medical in Catalonia on Tuesday morning, 18 August. Barcelona secured an earlier flight for the midfielder, prompting the change of plans and accelerating his arrival in the city.

Rodri is now expected to land in Barcelona later this evening. Once the medical is done on Tuesday, he will move straight on to signing his contract, clearing the way for the club to officially announce one of the biggest transfers of the summer.

Flick’s cornerstone

For Hansi Flick, this is more than a marquee name. It is a statement piece.

Rodri arrives on the back of a stunning World Cup campaign in which he drove Spain to the title and claimed the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player. At 30, he is not a long-term project, but Barcelona are not buying potential here. They are buying certainty.

They are buying a leader who has lifted the biggest trophies, a midfielder who dictates tempo, calms storms, and raises standards. His experience, authority, and relentless winning mentality plug straight into a squad that has been crying out for a commanding presence at the base of midfield.

The question now turns to timing. With the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly scheduled for 19 August, there is intrigue over whether Flick will risk giving his new signing a first taste of action in front of the home crowd so soon after arrival.

Contract pending, medical scheduled, the numbers agreed. All that remains is to see how quickly Rodri can turn from headline signing into the heartbeat of Barcelona’s midfield.
