Arsenal Signs Georgia Stanway on Free Transfer

Arsenal are set to make one of the statement signings of the summer, with Georgia Stanway poised to join the club on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the start of July.

The move, understood to be agreed in full and only subject to the 27-year-old passing a medical, will see one of the most complete midfielders in the women’s game return to England when her contract with the Frauen Bundesliga champions expires.

Arsenal land a midfield general

Arsenal have tracked Stanway for years. Quietly at first, then with growing intent as she established herself as the heartbeat of both Bayern and England. This is not a speculative punt; it is a long-planned piece of succession work in a midfield that has needed fresh power, goals and leadership.

Stanway leaves Bavaria with a formidable record. Across four seasons she helped Bayern to four Bundesliga titles, embedding herself not just as a starter but as a standard-setter. Her influence stretched beyond the numbers, but the numbers still hit hard: 32 goals in 91 internationals for England, and a reputation as one of the elite central midfielders in the world.

Her importance to the Lionesses is already etched into recent history. Stanway has been central to England’s back-to-back European triumphs and their run to the 2023 World Cup final, driving games from midfield with the same mix of aggression, intelligence and timing that first marked her out at Manchester City.

A farewell that mattered in Munich

Bayern knew what they were losing. When the club confirmed in January that Stanway would depart at the end of her deal, the tone around the announcement said plenty. Bianca Rech, the club’s director of women’s football, highlighted her “commitment and character” and admitted Stanway had “stolen our hearts”. Those were not throwaway compliments. They were the words of a club that understood exactly how central she had become, and how hard she would be to replace.

The conversations about her future were open, honest and, ultimately, decisive. Stanway wanted a new challenge. Arsenal, watching closely, were ready.

Arsenal’s rebuild gathers pace

For Arsenal, the timing is deliberate. The club have been plotting a refresh in midfield long before last season’s Champions League final success, with an eye on reclaiming a WSL title they have not held since 2019. Stanway fits that ambition: a player in her prime, proven at the very top level, capable of dictating big games and deciding them.

She is not arriving alone. Arsenal are also close to finalising another free transfer, with Géraldine Reuteler set to join after confirming her departure from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Switzerland international offers a different threat: an attacking midfielder who can also operate across the forward line, with 54 goals and 45 assists in 184 games for Frankfurt, including 10 goals this season. Her performances at last summer’s European Championship on home soil underlined her ability to shine on a major stage.

Put simply, Arsenal are not tinkering. They are reshaping.

Big names out, big responsibility in

That shift is underlined by the exits already confirmed. Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Victoria Pelova, Laia Codina and goalkeepers Manuela Zinsberger and Naomi Williams will all leave the club this summer. Those are not peripheral figures. They are players who have carried responsibility, minutes and expectation.

Clearing that space creates both opportunity and pressure. Stanway and Reuteler will walk into a dressing room that looks and feels different, one that has been intentionally opened up for new leaders, new voices, new patterns on the pitch.

Arsenal have made their move. They have gone for proven quality, for players with medals, scars and the hunger for more. The question now is simple: will this be the summer that finally tilts the WSL title back in their direction?
