Arsenal Signs Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £50m
Arsenal have finally landed the defender Mikel Arteta wanted – and paid a premium to do it.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa is joining Arsenal in a deal worth £50m plus add-ons, with the England international set to sign a long-term contract after completing his medical.
On X, Romano posted: “Arsenal agree deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, here we go! Fee agreed at £50m plus add-ons and long term deal in place with English defender. Konsa will undergo his medical in next 48h then signing in at #AFC.”
The Athletic backed up the move, putting the guaranteed fee slightly higher at £51m plus bonuses and stating that the medical is scheduled for Thursday.
Arsenal move fast after injury blows
The move underlines Arsenal’s “win-now” approach to this window. Four first-team signings were already through the door: Illan Meslier to support in goal, Piero Hincapie’s loan made permanent, Bruno Guimaraes bolstering midfield, and Christos Tzolis brought in to replace Leandro Trossard on the left.
Arteta still wants an elite left winger – a signing that would likely open the exit door for Gabriel Martinelli – and a more ruthless centre-forward remains on the list. But injuries forced a change of priority.
With William Saliba sidelined by a back problem and Jurrien Timber nursing a groin issue, Arsenal turned their attention to a defender who could cover both centre-back and right-back. Konsa fits that brief cleanly.
The 28-year-old has been Aston Villa’s standout defender for several seasons and enhanced his reputation on the biggest stage with England at the World Cup. For a side chasing titles now, not later, his profile makes obvious sense.
Konsa was the top target – but not the first call
Romano has described Konsa as Arsenal’s “top target all summer”, yet the Gunners did try to prise away another defender before turning fully to Villa.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Arsenal made a move for Marc Pubill at Atletico Madrid in recent weeks. The response from Spain was blunt: Atleti had no interest in negotiating. Pubill stays put, and Arsenal pushed ahead with Konsa.
The result is a major statement at the back and another heavy investment in a squad built to challenge on all fronts. With Konsa on his way and more business planned, Arsenal’s window is starting to look like one that leaves no excuses when the season reaches its sharp end.
