Argentine Football Association Clarifies President Claudio Tapia’s Status Amid US Judiciary Inquiry
The Argentine Football Association has put to rest the speculation about its president, Claudio Tapia, being summoned by US authorities over allegations of money laundering. The controversy had ignited following reports that claimed Tapia was involved in investigations linked to commercial contracts worth over $300 million.
These investigations reportedly stem from raids conducted at the Association's offices last December, stirring doubts and concern within football circles.
Official Statement Denies Claims Against Tapia
On Wednesday evening, the Association released a statement on their official website denying all rumors that Tapia faced summons or asset seizures. They labeled the stories about confiscation of his assets, mobile phones, and electronic devices as entirely unfounded.
The statement further clarified that neither Tapia nor treasurer Pablo Toviggino were subjects of any summons by the US judiciary. Instead, the order was directed at an unnamed individual required to appear before a grand jury and provide related documents and communications concerning various officials.
Tensions Surround Argentina’s 2026 World Cup Campaign
The period around the 2026 World Cup proved tense for Argentine football. The national team finished as runners-up after a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Throughout the tournament, allegations circulated accusing the Argentine squad and their star player, Lionel Messi, of receiving preferential treatment from FIFA. Rival teams' players and coaches launched sharp criticisms against Argentina during the competition on American soil.
Recent Achievements of Argentine Football
Despite these challenges, the Argentine Football Association has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years, largely thanks to Messi and his teammates. Their list of honors includes:
- Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024
- World Cup victory in 2022
- Finalissima title in 2022
