Arbeloa Confirms Real Madrid Exit as Mourinho Expected to Return

Alvaro Arbeloa stood behind the microphone and didn’t bother dodging the question.

“Yes,” he said, when asked if he would no longer be coaching Real Madrid next season.

One word, and an already turbulent season at the Santiago Bernabeu took on an even sharper edge, with veteran coach Jose Mourinho widely expected to return to the club.

Real Madrid close out their La Liga campaign on Saturday at home to Athletic Bilbao, a finale that now doubles as a farewell – at least for now – for a man who has worn almost every badge the club can offer: player, youth coach, and, briefly, first-team boss.

Florentino Perez turned to Arbeloa in January, appointing him after Xabi Alonso’s departure in a bid to stabilise a season that never quite settled. Now the president is poised to change course again, with Portuguese coach Mourinho set to take the reins for a second spell in charge.

Arbeloa made it clear there will be no overlap.

Spaniard Arbeloa was unequivocal when asked if he would remain on as part of Mourinho’s staff should the Portuguese return. The answer was as firm as his earlier confirmation of his exit.

“Mou has a fantastic technical team, he's got good people around him, if he comes to Madrid he will come with his team,” Arbeloa said. “There's no chance that I would be with him. Then, my future... from Monday I'll think about that.”

For now, his focus is on one more match in a stadium that has shaped his professional life.

Arbeloa, who wore the white shirt between 2009 and 2016 and later returned to coach in the youth ranks, spoke less like a departing employee and more like someone leaving a family home with the door deliberately left on the latch.

“I hope it's a see you later... I've always considered this my home, I've belonged to Madrid for 20 years in various roles,” he said.

Saturday’s clash with Athletic Bilbao will be his last game this season as coach of Real Madrid. On whether it will be his last ever in that role, he refused to close the book.

“It will be my last game this season as coach of Real Madrid, I don't know if it will be the last game of my life as coach of Real Madrid. We never know. I'll try and enjoy it and try to get the win.”

One game left, a fanbase braced for the return of Mourinho, and a club icon stepping aside without slamming the door. At the Bernabeu, goodbyes rarely feel final.
