Aleksandar Stankovic's Decision to Stay and Compete at Inter
Aleksandar Stankovic has made his choice. With Inter weighing up whether to cash in or send him out on loan, the 21-year-old has told the club he intends to stay at San Siro and fight for a place under Cristian Chivu this season.
The message, reported on Thursday and reinforced by Gianluca Di Marzio’s latest updates, is clear: no loan, no exit, not even with Curtis Jones about to walk through the door.
A Treble Legacy and a €23m Bet
Stankovic’s surname already carries weight in the blue-and-black half of Milan. Son of Dejan Stankovic, a key part of Inter’s historic treble-winning side, Aleksandar grew up in the Nerazzurri academy before being sold to Club Brugge last summer.
Belgium changed everything. The midfielder shone in Bruges, his performances strong enough to convince Inter to trigger their buy-back clause. The fee was significant – a reported €23m – a statement that the club still sees him as one of Europe’s standout young midfielders.
Yet a big price tag does not automatically guarantee a starting shirt at San Siro. Not in this midfield.
A Packed Engine Room
Chivu’s options in the middle of the pitch are stacked.
- Nicolo Barella, a fixture for Italy, remains untouchable in the starting XI.
- Hakan Calhanoglu, the metronome and captain of Turkey, is also locked in.
- Now comes Curtis Jones, set to arrive from Liverpool in a €35m deal and widely expected to slot straight into the first team.
- Behind them, the depth keeps coming. Petar Sucic offers energy and range.
- Piotr Zielinski brings experience and craft between the lines.
- Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who signed a contract extension earlier in the summer, still provides reliability and intelligence in tight matches.
- Andy Diouf has even been pushed out to right wing-back in pre-season, underlining how many bodies are competing for minutes in central areas.
On paper, it is exactly the kind of crowded midfield that usually pushes a 21-year-old towards a loan move. Inter have already considered it, along with the possibility of selling him on quickly for a profit after his impressive spell in Belgium.
Stankovic has pushed back.
No Loan, No Backing Down
Despite the internal debate over his future, Stankovic has made it known he wants to stay and compete, even with Jones’ arrival set to raise the bar again. Di Marzio reports that the midfielder is not interested in leaving on loan for 2026-27, preferring to test himself directly under Chivu rather than chase guaranteed minutes elsewhere.
For Inter, it creates an intriguing dilemma. They have invested heavily in him, yet they also have one of the deepest midfields in Europe. For Stankovic, it is a gamble on himself in one of the most demanding environments in the game.
He knows the weight of the shirt. He knows the competition. And he is still choosing the fight.
