Teams Advancing to Round of 32
Mexico was the first team to secure a spot on June 18. Along with United States and Argentina, they qualified early after just two group matches. The remaining 29 teams clinched their places by June 27, with Algeria and Austria being the last to earn advancement.
How the Knockout Stage Works
The Round of 32 switches the tournament to single elimination. No points or draws exist here; every match produces a winner. If teams are tied after regular time, they play 30 minutes of extra time. Should the tie remain, the outcome is decided by a penalty shootout involving five players from each side taking shots. The team scoring more penalties advances.
Matchups are pre-arranged so group winners face runners-up or top third-place finishers from other groups. This structure continues through subsequent rounds: Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
Path to the Knockouts
The tournament began with 48 teams split into 14 groups of four. Each team played three group matches, earning three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss. Goal difference and goals scored serve as tiebreakers if points are equal. The top two teams from each group plus the eight best third-place teams moved on to the Round of 32.
