2026 World Cup: Results, Schedule, Group Updates, and Viewing Information

2026 World Cup Overview

The qualification playoffs have concluded, finalizing the 48 teams set to compete in this summer's 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. During December’s draw, 42 teams were assigned to groups, with six more spots filled by playoff winners.

The United States, automatically qualified as a host, is placed in Group D. Their campaign kicked off on June 12 with a victory over Paraguay. Upcoming matches pit them against Australia and Türkiye to close out group play.

Canada competes in Group B, starting with a draw versus Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their remaining group matches are against Qatar and Switzerland. Meanwhile, Mexico hosted the tournament's opening game, securing a 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca. They face Korea and Czechia next in Group A.

Qualified Teams by Confederation

  • AFC: Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Iraq
  • CAF: Algeria, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, DR Congo
  • CONCACAF: United States, Canada, Mexico, Curaçao, Haiti, Panama

Competition Format

The tournament features 12 groups of four teams each. Every team plays three group matches to decide who advances to the knockout rounds.

Out of the 48, 32 teams progress: the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers. Ties break down through goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, fair play records, and if needed, drawing of lots.

FIFA introduced a new setup to keep the highest-ranked teams apart until later stages. For example, Spain (ranked first) and defending champions Argentina (second) are in separate knockout pathways. The same separation applies to France (third) and England (fourth), ensuring these top squads avoid meeting before semifinals if they advance.

Teams from the same confederation don’t share a group except for European teams.
