Tracking the 2026 FIFA World Cup Groups

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off today with two opening matches: Mexico, one of the host nations, faces South Africa, followed by a clash between South Korea and Czechia. Soon after, the other 44 teams will enter the competition.

Advancing to the Knockout Round

This World Cup features 48 teams split into 12 groups. The knockout phase now starts with 32 teams instead of 16. The top two teams from each group move forward, adding up to 24 squads. Then, the best eight third-place teams join them to complete the round of 32.

How Ties Are Broken in the Group Stage

If teams end up with the same points, the first step is to check points earned in matches played among those tied teams. Then goal difference in those matches, followed by goals scored between them. If still unresolved, the process looks at overall goal difference across all group games, then total goals scored in all matches. If equality persists, fair play points (based on yellow and red cards) come next. Lastly, the latest FIFA World Rankings decide the order.

Ranking the Third-Place Teams

Third-place teams are ranked by points first, then goal difference, followed by goals scored. Fair play points determine ties afterward. If teams remain level, FIFA rankings settle the matter.
